Teach-a-Cause
What is the IDEA behind Teach-a-Cause?
Instruction - Teaching by telling a story of a nonprofit founder's (or executive director's) daily routines and instructing others through that story of their leadership style and lessons learned.
Demonstration - modeling the truth of what is the process of building an initiative in a founders' particular human services niche.. basically, it's show and tell.
Experience - Offering a successful proven pattern for others to apply
and practice daily as they build their initiatives.
Assessment - Providing mentoring and direction in response to feedback
from those seeking specific advice.

Innovators in the U.S. Nonprofit Community are Growing! The number of new nonprofits founded in 2011 exceeded 55,000 in number. Today, the U.S. has over 1.8 million active nonprofits, the majority of which are designed to help address a human need.
Founders like Fran Heitzman and Leeanne McGrath on this page have connected through the NICE Network to further expand and improve their missions. By sharing board members and exchanging ideas across two different states, they've been able to help more people where the need exists more efficiently. NICE is about connecting nonprofit leaders who want to share ideas and strategies to speed up help to those with needs in other communities. We salute these individuals who have a heart for others and who see the big picture of replicating ideas that work. The map is complements of Guidestar. This map represents the number of nonprofits identified through Guidestar. For a larger map view, click here to identify your state's total number. Fran Heitzman and Leeann McGrath founded furniture bank initiatives in two separate cities. While both were successful, they had never met. They made a connection thanks to being featured in the book The Power of One. Both highly successful green initiatives, that help families through a life transition, were aided in their growth by each group deciding to share some of their board members with the other. Today both initiatives are award-winning nonprofits and are pursuing replication into more cities, in part, thanks to the NICE connection.Debra Berg experimented with connecting civic entrepreneurs in 2006 by hosting a radio show on VoiceAmerica.com. On one show Herbert Lusk, former NFL running-back and founder of People for People (Philadelphia, PA), connected with Chris Mangum, founder of Jobs for Life (active in 120 cities) on one of Debra's shows. Even though Rev. Lusk’s initiative boasted twenty years’ success in Philly, he was ready to replicate it to more locations. Herb was open to hearing how Chris was replicating JFL. After hearing Chris tell his story, he told Debra that he’s “always a student willing to learn” and requested Chris’s contact information in order to learn from his experiences. The National Institute for Civic Enteprise, was formed in 2007 to expand the possibilities for connecting effective and passionate human service nonprofit leaders across the nation. The NICENetwork is a vision Debra has for connecting these leaders, on and offline, so they can share what's working and what's needed to help those they serve. The effort also promotes replication of initiatives at all levels. |
